Benny L. Joyner, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and Director of the UNC Clinical Skills and Patient Simulation Center, has been honored with the Craver Medical Student Teaching Award. The Craver Medical Student Teaching Award was established by UNC School of Medicine graduate Joseph M. Craver, MD, to honor outstanding teachers in internal medicine, pediatrics, and surgery who inspire and change the lives of medical students through their teaching.


Benny L. Joyner, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and Director of the UNC Clinical Skills and Patient Simulation Center, has been honored with the Craver Medical Student Teaching Award. The Craver Medical Student Teaching Award was established by UNC School of Medicine graduate Joseph M. Craver, MD, to honor outstanding teachers in internal medicine, pediatrics, and surgery who inspire and change the lives of medical students through their teaching.

Benny Joyner, MD, MPH

Benny Joyner, MD, MPH, is a pediatric intensivist whose research specializes in simulation training and innovative forms of medical education. He focuses on developing novel simulation strategies utilizing current high-fidelity technology to explore its use in novel situations as well as exploring how to better implement this technology given time and resource constraints in health care. He also works with providers, building partnerships to further explore simulation training as a method of novel medical education.

“Dr. Joyner is an outstanding, innovative and enthusiastic educator who has impacted many students over the years. His role in leading simulation is an example for other educators across the country. He is not only a leader in Children’s, but also within the School of Medicine and across the state,” said Stephanie Duggins Davis, MD, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Joseph M. Craver received his bachelor’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill and is an alumnus of UNC School of Medicine’s graduating class of 1967. Craver, a Cardiac Surgeon, enjoyed a successful career over three decades in academic medicine as a faculty member, teacher and mentor in the Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Surgery.
