The School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is conducting an internal search for an Assistant Dean for Graduate Education. The Office of Graduate Education (OGE) was established in the School of Medicine to foster excellence in graduate research and training (med.unc.edu/oge).

The Assistant Dean will oversee the operations and mission of the OGE which is the following: “The Office of Graduate Education supports the development of future biomedical science leaders. We promote innovative recruitment and training, stimulate purposeful career development, remove barriers to success, and foster a collaborative, inclusive research community.” The Assistant Dean will coordinate the activities of six OGE program Directors and their faculty partners. These teams implement the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP, an umbrella admissions and first year graduate program for 14 Ph.D. programs), the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (an NIH funded program for supporting PhD students from under-represented groups), the post-baccalaureate bridge program for prospective PhD students from under-represented groups (NIH-funded UNC-PREP), the extensive suite of career exploration and professional development resources (TIBBS, and the affiliated internship program), a summer research internship program, science outreach (e.g. DNA Day) and a collection of additional staff-led and student-led efforts such as faculty mentor training, student wellness, and student identity groups. OGE also participates in original scholarship and research related to graduate training in biomedical sciences. The successful candidate will supervise the OGE Directors, interface with PhD programs and their leaders, and will provide direction and vision for OGE activities. The Assistant Dean works closely with and reports to the Associate Dean for Graduate Education who is responsible for communicating with senior leadership in the School of Medicine and other schools, finalizing the OGE budget, and supporting the short-term and long-term goals of the Assistant Dean and OGE.

Applicants for the Assistant Dean position must have a primary or joint faculty appointment in the School of Medicine, hold a Ph.D. or M.D. in a biological or biomedical discipline, have substantial research experience, and demonstrate a strong leadership record in graduate student training and mentoring – including familiarity with efforts to diversify the biomedical workforce. Prospective applicants can direct questions to the current Associate Dean for Graduate Education (jean_cook@med.unc.edu). Applicants should send a single pdf containing the following: curriculum vitae or NIH biosketch, a letter containing both a description of past engagement in graduate training and a description of efforts to diversify the biomedical workforce, and contacts for three references to:
