NIH Phase II Small Business Research Grant Awarded to EpiCypher and UNC physicians; Drs. Saira Sheikh and Nigel Key.

Dr. Saira Sheikh of the UNC Thurston Arthritis Research Center and Dr. Nigel Key of the UNC Blood Research Center partnered with local biotech company EpiCypher® for the successful Grant, funded by NIAID. The total award to EpiCypher® is $3 million dollars over three years, with just under a $1 million sub-award to UNC.

Teresa Seeman, PhD, is Professor of Epidemiology at the Fielding School of Public Health and of Medicine in the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Trained as an epidemiologist, with post-doctoral training in neuroendocrinology, her research interests are inter-disciplinary, focusing on role of social and psychological factors in health and aging, with particular interest in elucidating the biological pathways through which such factors impact on health.

A Community Effort: Bringing Maternity Care Back to Chatham County

In alliance with the Chatham County Department of Health, Piedmont Health Services, and local medical providers and non-profits, UNC Family Medicine is poised to dramatically improve maternal and child health in the community. On February 27, these organizations publicly joined forces with UNC Chatham Hospital in Siler City to dedicate a wing of the hospital for the new maternity unit. The wing will undergo renovation and restoration before a planned opening in September 2020.
