Robert Short, Anthony Asher, Rashmi Muthukkumar and Pranavi Sanka co-authored a commentary called “Family Engagement Navigators: A Novel Program to Facilitate Family-Centered Care in the Intensive Care Unit During Covid-19.”

Four School of Medicine students wrote and published a commentary in the New England Journal of Medicine’s Catalyst. Robert Short, Anthony Asher, Rashmi Muthukkumar and Pranavi Sanka wrote, “Medical students are being trained to participate in a multicomponent family support model that facilitates communication between families and care teams, humanizes patients, and provides emotional support to patients’ families at a time when restricted visitation of loved ones to critically ill patients is one of the devastating realities of the pandemic.”

“Family-centered care — which incorporates family members into a collaborative team including patients, families, and health care teams — is a key component of high-quality ICU care. However, restricted visitation policies associated with the Covid-19 pandemic inhibits the ability to provide family-centered care, and reports from centers experiencing early surges describe family communication as “complex and fragmented.””
