The system is solar powered.  The LED lights are imbedded into the road. The lamps are directed at the driver’s side of a vehicle and configured to give the driver adequate time to react to the presence of a pedestrian in the cross walk. The primary purpose of this system is to alert approaching motorists of the presence of pedestrians entering the cross walk. Its our hope that this additional alert will remind drivers of their obligation to stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks.

The lights will be activated when a pedestrian pushes the one of the buttons on either end of the crosswalk entrance. A flashing light sequence begins to alert motorists of pedestrians entering the crosswalk. The sequence lasts 20 seconds to allow pedestrians adequate time to cross the street.

In addition, new Pedestrian Crossing Signs have been installed with LED enhanced crosswalk lines. These are activated by the crosswalk buttons.

We urge you to use the button every time you cross the street to activate the system. If you have any questions, please e-mail them to Jan Buffington at jan_buffington@med.unc.edu or call the School of Medicine Planning Office at 966-2441.
