Career Development Grand Rounds: "Educational Program Design"

This month the Academy of Educators will begin offering a monthly series of Career Development Grand Rounds. These sessions will be open to the entire School of Medicine, and will address career advancement topics specific to medical educators including educational design and instructional skills. Please join us for the first of these sessions on Feb. 15.

Clark Denniston, MD,  will be presenting "Educational Program Design." Lite breakfast will be provided. There will be an encore presentation Feb. 19 from noon - 1 p.m. in 2020 Bondurant. Feel free to bring your lunch. Cookies and beverages will be provided.

Dr. Denniston is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at UNC and has directed the Family Medicine Residency Program since 1997. Denniston's academic interest is focused on improving teaching skills of clinical faculty, curriculum design with a focus on competency based learning, handling difficult learning situations, and mentoring. He has published articles and made national presentations in these areas. He currently serves as an instructor in the "Teaching and Learning" segment of the UNC Faculty Development Fellowship program.

Denniston is a national consultant to the American Academy of Family Physician's Residency Program Solutions committee. He maintains a full scope of clinical practice, including maternal and child healthcare. He teaches in the Healer's Art Course for medical students. Denniston attended Georgetown University School of Medicine; completed his residency training at Ft. Ord, Calif., and was a faculty member in Family Medicine at Duke University, before coming to Chapel Hill in 1996.

The Academy of Educators Grand Rounds will draw upon the expertise within SOM departments as well as from across the campus, and will also include national thought leaders in future sessions. Each session will be offered twice during the month, at different times, to make it possible for many to attend. We will also record the sessions through lecture capture so they can be "attended" by those who can make neither. We are in the process of securing CME credit for participation. A full spring schedule will be circulated soon.
