A.W.A.K.E. Sleep Support Group
Wednesday, Feb. 10, 6 - 8 p.m.
Alert, Well, and Keeping Energetic is a support group for people affected by sleep apnea. Topics may include information on sleep apnea, sleep disorder equipment, and new research findings. The UNC School of Medicine Department of Neurology facilitates lectures, hosts sleep aid vendors, and provides dinner and refreshments for the presentation.  This group meets on a quarterly basis at the UNC Wellness Center from 6 - 8 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month.

Cholesterol Screening
Tuesday, Feb. 9, 7 - 9 a.m.
The UNC Wellness Center and McClendon Laboratories have partnered to provide cholesterol screenings during February for American Heart Month. The cholesterol screenings will provide full lipid panel including Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and glucose. This screening will be a full blood draw, and requires a 12-hour fast. Water consumption is okay. Results will be sent directly home to participants. Light refreshments will be served. We will host a Cholesterol lecture to help explain and discuss results. Registration is required. Please plan to arrive 10 minutes prior to scheduled appointment. Space is limited. $28 for members; $33 for non-members.

UNC Cardiac Survivors' Support Group
Thursday, Feb. 11 and 25, noon - 1 p.m.
This is an informal, drop-in discussion group for individuals who have survived a cardiac diagnosis or event. This group is facilitated by Dr. Sandra Freeman, a psychiatrist in private practice in Chapel Hill and a cardiac survivor herself. The group meets at the UNC Wellness Center from noon - 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of the month.

Hypertension & Heart Disease
Tuesday, Feb. 16, 6:30 - 8 p.m.
Alan Hinderliter, MD, Associate Professor in the UNC Division of Cardiology will give an overview of hypertension and role it plays in heart disease. 

Atrial Fibrillation
Friday, Feb. 19, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
Ross Simpson, Jr., MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology in the UNC Division of Cardiology, will review the issues around atrial fibrillation, one of the cardiovascular conditions that is increasing in incidence associated with the aging of the U.S. population. Dr. Simpson will review prevention and treatment strategies associated with atrial fibrillation.

Cholesterol: The Real Discussion
Wednesday, Feb. 24, 6:30 - 8 p.m.
Dr. Phil Mendys will discuss the "numbers" behind the assessment of cardiovascular disease and risk assessment. Cholesterol numbers may seem complicated if you don't know how to interpret them. Dr. Mendys will help us to gain a better understanding of their meaning to our overall heart health. Phil Mendys, Pharm D, is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine and Pharmacotherapy at the UNC Division of Cardiology and the UNC School of Pharmacy. Dr. Mendys is also the Co-Director of the UNC Lipid and Prevention Clinic.

How to Prevent a Heart Attack
Friday, Feb. 26, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
Ross Simpson, Jr. MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology in the UNC Division of Cardiology, will present the risk factors for heart disease which leads to heart attacks, the leading killer of men and women in the United States. Dr. Simpson will review prevention strategies associated with heart attacks.
