2009 Survey on Patient Safety Culture summary

The Agency for Health Care Research and Quality Hospital and Medical Office survey on Patient Safety Culture was administered to all faculty and staff in December 2009. This was the third time UNC Health Care used the Hospital survey and the first time using the Medical Office survey.

Hospital results indicate significant improvements in patient safety awareness and perception since 2008 and show that UNC Health Care scores significantly higher in several areas than other hospitals with more than 500 beds. Medical Office results are similar to the other medical offices.  Across unit/areas or clinics in the health care system a typical range of perceptions of safety cultures is seen.  Unit/area and clinic reports as well as aggregate reports can be found on the Quality Web site - http://intranet.unchealthcare.org/employees/quality/.

Areas with an overall average Percent Positive response of less than 60 percent are encouraged to identify focused interventions with support provided by the Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Division.  Please contact Celeste Mayer, Patient Safety Officer with questions.
