New Workstation Management Tool

OIS will remotely install a new management tool on all Microsoft Windows workstations beginning April 15. This new tool will install a client agent, Configuration Manager, and new anti-virus software, Endpoint Protection. Only Microsoft Windows workstations that are joined to the domain ad.unc.edu will be affected, and machines will install this software on reboot only. Read on for more details and screenshots related to the installation.

Attention OIS Clients,

OIS wanted to inform you that we are fielding a new management tool for Microsoft Windows workstations in departments supported by OIS beginning this Monday April 15, 2013. This new tool will install a client agent (Configuration Manager) and new anti-virus software (Endpoint Protection). We will be using automated tools to perform the installation. Only Microsoft Windows workstations that are joined to the domain ad.unc.edu will be affected. We anticipate the rollout to be complete by Monday April 22, 2013.

At a later date, we will be able to field the same agent on Apple Macintosh computers and non-domain Microsoft Windows workstations.

System Center 2012 Configuration Manager

The management tool being installed is Microsoft System Center 2012 Configuration Manager. This tool will allow OIS to:

1. Perform software and hardware inventorying of your workstations

2. Install and manage the new Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection anti-virus/anti-malware software

3. Generate reports on the workstations in your department

OIS is utilizing Configuration Manager to increase our ability to perform routine management tasks for our customers.

OIS will start by focusing on the Asset Inventory/Management and Anti-virus capabilities. See Future Benefits (Below) section for upcoming features.

Installation

Over the next few days you will see new software installed on your department's machines, including:

System Center Configuration Manager

System Center Endpoint Protection 2012

Software Center

We are using a process called Group Policy to require machines to install this software on reboot only. So as your team restarts their computers after Monday morning Configuration Manager will be installed automatically.

I’m including screen shots to show what will be installed so that your departmental staff will know that the changes are legitimate, including changes to the Start Menu; ToolTips showing Endpoint Protection; and the Software Center.

Installation Screenshots

Start Menu Changes

This picture shows the two new menu items that will be added to your departmental workstations (highlighted in red).

Endpoint Protection (highlighted)

This image is from the ToolTips section of the menu bar on Microsoft Windows 7 computers. The highlighted shield is the icon for Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection which replaces Symantec Endpoint Protection v. 11.

Software Center Start Menu Item

This item show the Start Menu option to start the Software Center. OIS will not use the Software Center during the initial rollout. OIS will alert you when we will use it to field Software Updates and Application Installation.

Future Benefits

In the future we will be using this Configuration Manager to:

1. Field software updates/patches from a variety of software vendors

a. Microsoft

b. Adobe

c. Third-party

2. Automate software package installation (e.g. Microsoft Office 2013) using the Software Center

3. Audit workstation configuration to maintain compliance with security policy

4. Generate virus and Trojan alerts to the appropriate IT staff

5. Share reporting capability with our business colleagues to improve the management of IT costs

OIS will keep the you informed as we expand the use of this tool to provide IT support to you. Thank you.

CHIP Conference: IT Security in a Decentralized Environment

Dennis Schmidt, MS, CISSP, Director, Office of Information Systems in the School of Medicine will give an overview of the challenges that IT Security staff face in a decentralized environment and some of the solutions they have come up with to meet those challenges.

UNC meets requirements for 2012 Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) Electronic Prescribing Program!

For the past few years, UNC P&A has focused on increasing the use of electronic prescribing (e-prescribing). Clinicians are adopting or switching to e-prescription as the preferred method of prescribing in record numbers. As a result, UNC P&A will avoid penalties and earn an incentive.

By demonstrating that Physician and Associates (P&A) providers issued at least 2500 e-prescriptions as a group by June 30 2012, the practice plan will:

Earn an incentive for 2012 – about $300,000

Avoid penalties for 2013 – about $750,000

This year Practice Quality & Innovation (PQI) partnered with Family Medicine and General Internal Medicine to ensure compliance with this e-Prescribing program. This way we were able to limit the administrative burden of submitting the required codes to these two clinics versus spreading it across all clinics. We thank both clinics for participating and working diligently so that the entire practice plan can benefit from the incentive. A portion of the incentive will be used to reimburse all Departments for previously incurred penalties*.

Quick Facts about MIPPA e-Prescribing:

P&A chose to participate in this program as a group practice, meaning all P&A providers participate in the program together instead of as individuals.

The group practice must submit 2,500 specific CPT billing codes (G8553) to demonstrate that an e-Prescription was issued.

All codes must be billed by June 30 of each year to qualify for incentives that year and avoid penalties applied in the following year. The program expires after next year. We’ll aim to comply with program requirements again in 2013.

*In previous years we could not meet MIPPA requirements and were penalized. Each department is currently realizing penalties received in 2011.

The deadline for laptop encryption is July 1, 2012 Laptop encryption is required for all users storing sensitive data on their laptops.

UNC has purchased PGP Whole Disk Encryption to protect windows laptops storing sensitive data. If you store sensitive data, and you do not want to encrypt your laptop, you MUST remove the sensitive data. It is the USER'S responsibility to protect the data they are using on their mobile device. Do not assume your laptop is encrypted. You will know your laptop is encrypted if you see a gray PGP screen when you turn on the laptop. If you do not see this screen, you do not have the PGP Whole Disk Encryption software.

Please stop by the OIS helpdesk in Macnider 065 to have your laptop encrypted. This service is currently free of charge, and your laptop will be backed up prior to encryption. The UNC Deadline for encryption to be in compliance is July 1, 2012. After July 1, we will no longer have the encryption station. You can bring your laptop to the helpdesk for encryption free of charge. If you require an onsite technician to encrypt your laptop charges will apply for the technician’s time.

Meaningful Use: Countdown to the FY12 Org Goal! Urgent information about your attestation

UNC’s FY12 Organizational Quality Goals included a measure for 35 percent of our Eligible Professionals (EPs) to attest to Meaningful Use by June 30 of this year.

The Practice Quality and Innovation (PQI) Project Team is avidly monitoring the data to identify when an EP meets all the measures over a rolling 90-day reporting period, and is considered “Ready to Attest.”

Each day we’re finding more and more of you are “Ready to Attest!” This is great!—but “Ready” isn’t “Attested.” The actual attestation involves a complex process (as one would expect with a federal program) that PQI has spared you by attesting on your behalf, but we need your authorization in order to complete your attestation.

From now through the end of the month, we will publish an updated table each week listing the status of all UNC EPs who are “Ready to Attest,” and the action required to complete the attestation. Please continue to check it if you don’t see your name listed initially. The table is always available through our website (below), or can be accessed by clicking here.

If you have any concerns or questions regarding your MU attestation, please contact your PQI Project Coach or send an email to meaningfuluse@unch.unc.edu.
