Upcoming maintenance on shared file services scheduled for Saturday, October 5

On Saturday, October 5th at 9:00 a.m., School of Medicine IT will perform a major upgrade to the School of Medicine file services used by many departments within the School. Typically staff access the file services through the H:, J:, and S: drives on Microsoft Windows computers. The upgrade should not be, and has not been during past updates, disruptive to file services.

Summary

We are scheduling this change on Saturday, October 5th at 9:00 a.m. to avoid normal business hours and limit the impact to normal business operations.  School of Medicine IT will have staff monitor the change and confirm file services are functional at the end of the change.

Once the change is complete, please contact the IT Service Desk at help.med.unc.edu or 962-HELP for assistance.

What to Know

School of Medicine IT is completing a life cycle upgrade to our managed file services.  We are upgrading the NetApp cluster that provides our file services.  The cluster has 2 nodes and should experience no downtime during the upgrade as we will migrate services from one cluster node to the other.  School of Medicine IT staff will be onsite to monitor the work and confirm at each failover point that services are still working before proceeding.  Once the work is completed we will test to confirm that departmental files are available.  If there is a special need that should be tested we are happy to work with those subject matter experts to include them in the testing phase.
