The Children’s Research Institute and CEHS: “Placental Origins of Positive Child Health Outcomes”

February 8, 2022 @ 12:15 pm - 1:30 pm

Dr. Santos is an associate professor and the Beerstecher-Blackwell Distinguished Term Scholar at the School of Nursing. He is the Director of the UNC Biobehavioral Laboratory Core Facility, and the Director of Training and Mentorship Division in the UNC Institute for Environmental Health Solutions at the Gilling’s School of Global Public Health. He has expertise in genomics, social determinants of health, and child development. His research focuses the developmental origins of health and disease for at risk children. Most of his NIH-funded work focuses on the placenta-brain axis to identify genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that are predictive of later life health in children who experience early life adversity, such as social hardship and biological insults (e.g., preterm birth). He also explores the effects of structural racism and discrimination on the epigenome and maternal-child health outcomes.
