Big crowd turns out for big trucks with a big benefit

Thousands of kids (some not so young!) came out on a beautiful day to truck a truck, honk a horn, and raise money for UNC Children's.

Thousands came out in Chapel Hill Sunday, April 17th, for the 8th annual Touch a Truck event. It’s a fundraiser for Boy Scout Troop 39 and UNC Children’s Hospital. Families turned out to have some fun and donate money to a good cause.

The event now features more than 40 vehicles from numerous organizations such as the Chapel Hill Fire Department. To date the event has raised $46,000 for UNC Children's. This year they are also organizing an online auction:

which will benefit the hospital.

The event's popularity is easy to explain: name a child who wouldn’t love to climb aboard a fire truck, big rig or bulldozer! Touch a Truck provides a unique opportunity for children to explore vehicles of all types – public service, emergency, utility, construction, landscaping, transportation, delivery and just plain cool – all in one place!

Children are allowed to touch, climb on and ask questions about their favorite trucks in a safe, supervised environment. They might even be able to honk the horn.

Accompanying personnel teach the children about the equipment displayed and how these machines help us and our community. Crafts, activities and kid-friendly food are available to make this a perfectly entertaining day for the entire family!

Boy Scout Troop 39, chartered by University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill, sponsors the event. Troop 39’s mission is to assist young men as they become knowledgeable, thinking, and responsible citizens of their community, nation, and world. Funds raised with benefit UNC Children's.
