Vaccinations A Vital Part of Back-to-School Season

Back to school time is also time to visit your physician's office - to make sure your child's vaccinations are current.

"You can never predict when or how they will happen" says Ravi Jhaveri, MD, about childhood viruses and disease. But prevention starts with a visit to your doctor's office to make sure children are up-to-date on their vaccinations. The back-to-school season is a busy time for this vitally important visit.

While many people are familiar with the vaccines given to younger children, Dr. Jhaveri notes that a crucial time is the pre-teen years, ages 11-12, when vaccines are needed for pertussis, tetanus, the papillomavirus, and the first dose of the meningococcal vaccine.

Vaccines are important not only for the health your child, Dr Jhaveri notes, but also to prevent disease from spreading. If you would like to contact UNC Children's for an appointment, please call UNC Healthlink at 984-974-1000.
