J. Paul Mounsey, MD, PhD, MRCP, FACC, of the UNC Center for Heart and Vascular Care at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been awarded the Sewell Family/McAllister Distinguished Professorship in Mounseyelectrophysiology.

The Sewell Family/McAllister Distinguished Professorship was established in 2010 by Cecil W. Sewell, Jr. in honor of his family and to recognize his colleague, Dr. Hugh A. McAllister, Jr. for his outstanding accomplishments in cardiology and his visionary leadership of the UNC McAllister Heart Institute.

The professorship is designed to recognize an outstanding clinician, teacher, and scholar for the Division of Cardiology and the UNC McAllister Heart Institute within the School of Medicine who is a recognized leader in the field of electrophysiology.

Dr. Mounsey has been committed to fostering electrophysiology research, educating students in cardiovascular research methodology and clinical procedures, and treating patients with proven, innovative electrophysiology techniques to treat cardiac arrhythmias. This award recognizes his hard work in these areas and the level of his scholarship.

Dr. Mounsey is a Professor in the Division of Cardiology and Director of UNC Heart Rhythm Services. As a clinical physician in the UNC Center for Heart and Vascular Care, his procedural specialties include the invasive and non-invasive treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. These treatments include pacer, defibrillator, biventricular device implantation and lead extraction. He also performs ablations on patients with all types of arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and ventricular tachycardia (VT).

A nationally recognized leader in the field of electrophysiology, Dr. Mounsey has served on the editorial board of Heart Rhythm, the journal of the Heart Rhythm Society and the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology as well as being an ad hoc reviewer for Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. In June 2013, Dr. Mounsey and his team in the UNC Center for Heart and Vascular Care were the first in North Carolina to use an innovative new procedure to treat atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with the new Lariat® device, a minimally-invasive alternative for people who cannot tolerate blood thinners in order to reduce their risk for stroke.
