On Monday, June 19, the new 1 Memorial Observation Unit will open 15 of its 25 beds in the former 1st floor OT/PT space at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. The remaining beds will be opened before the end of 2017.

The unit will serve medicine observation status patients and will be closed to only the Observation Service, a collaboration between Family Medicine and Internal Medicine Hospitalists. The goal is to move medicine observation status patients out of licensed beds, to cohort them in the new unit, and plan for discharge or inpatient admission within 24 hours of arrival on the unit.

Dr. Christopher Caulfield will be the unit’s Medical Director, and Christa Seaman will be the nurse manager.
