UNC Medical Center nationally ranked in five adult specialties, scored as high performing in five more. Four other UNC Health Care hospitals rated high performing for common adult procedures and conditions.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – August 14, 2018 – In the latest “Best Hospitals” rankings from U.S. News & World Report, UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill is nationally ranked or recognized as high performing in 10 clinical categories with its Ear, Nose & Throat specialty ranked #10 in the United States. U.S. News released its
2018-19 report earlier today.
National rankings for UNC Medical Center specialties include:

- Gastroenterology & GI Surgery #20
- Nephrology #26
- Cancer #36
- Gynecology #45
High performing adult specialties at UNC Medical Center include Diabetes & Endocrinology, Geriatrics, Pulmonology, Rheumatology and Urology. Overall, UNC Medical Center is ranked as the third hospital in the state and second in the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area.
U.S. News released its pediatric rankings in June, and UNC Children’s was nationally ranked in seven sub-specialties in that report. Earlier this year, the UNC School of Medicine was ranked #23 for Research and #1 in the nation for Primary Care by in the “Best Graduate Schools” report from U.S. News.
The U.S. News Best Hospitals analysis reviews hospitals’ performance in adult and pediatric clinical specialties, procedures and conditions. Scores are based on several factors, including survival, patient safety, nurse staffing and more. Hospitals are ranked nationally in specialties from cancer to urology and rated in common procedures and conditions, such as heart bypass surgery, hip and knee replacement and COPD.
Across the state, several UNC Health Care facilities are recognized for clinical excellence. UNC REX Healthcare in Raleigh is rated “high performing” in eight procedures and conditions including:

- Heart Failure

- Hip Replacement
- Knee Replacement
- Lung Surgery
Johnston UNC Health Care in Smithfield is rated high performing in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Nash UNC Health Care in Rocky Mount is rated high performing in heart failure as is UNC Rockingham in Eden (formerly Morehead Memorial). High Point Regional is rated high performing in both COPD and Heart Failure. High Point will become part of the Wake Forest Baptist Health in September.
