Come check out the finals in Bondurant G100 Tuesday Oct. 30 at 4 pm, when Alex Chung, Susanna Harris, and Bhawana Shrestha compete with other UNC-Chapel Hill graduate students to take top prizes.


Well wishers are welcome to attend the finals of the UNC Graduate School’s Three Minute Thesis competition in Bondurant Hall G100 Tuesday October 30 at 4 pm. Of the ten finalists, three are are from UNC School of Medicine departments: Alex Chung in pharmacology, and Susanna Harris and Bhawana Shrestha in microbiology and immunology.

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an academic competition that assists current graduate students with fostering effective presentation and communication skills. Participants have just three minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research project to a non-specialist audience.

3MT was developed by The University of Queensland in 2008 and is now held in more than 600 universities in 65 countries around the world.

Master’s and Doctoral students enrolled at UNC from any discipline administered by The Graduate School were welcome to register and participate in the competition. All are welcome to serve as audience members throughout the competition.

  • First place – $1000 and trip to compete in regional 3MT competition – February 2019
  • Second place – $600
  • People’s choice – $400
