We are excited to announce several changes in education administration at the School of Medicine. This enhanced leadership will help us as we work to improve learning environment and prepare for the LCME reaccreditation anticipated in early 2020.

Dr. Beat Steiner will be appointed the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education. Dr. Steiner has been in the role of Assistant Dean for Clinical Education. He will now oversee the work of medical student admissions, curriculum, and student affairs.

Dr. Kurt Gilliland is being promoted from Assistant Dean for Curriculum and Evaluation to Associate Dean for Curriculum. In that capacity he will help to better integrate the curriculum both horizontally across each year and vertically throughout the four-year experience.

Dr. Sarah Smithson will be appointed the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education.

Concurrently, Dr. Clark Denniston will be appointed Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Denniston‘s role as Designated Institutional Official over graduate medical education is unchanged but this new title demonstrates the tighter ties between the School of Medicine and UNC Health Care and, as suggested in the strategic plan, allows for better alignment between the educational programs for medical students and residents.

These changes go into effect November 1.
