Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Transportation and Parking Impacts
Chapel Hill Transit will operate a Saturday schedule on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Additionally, the university will be closed. UNC Hospitals shuttles will operate on a normal schedule. More details here.

Patient, doctor connect through rare cancer diagnosis
In March of 2011, when she was 14 years old, Lily Newton was diagnosed with a rare cancer of the bone and soft tissue called Ewing sarcoma. Cancer changed Newton’s life in more ways than she could have imagined.

The House that Caring Built: Volunteers needed for Habitat for Humanity project
Volunteers are needed to help build a Habitat for Humanity home sponsored by UNC Health Care. The home will be owned by Anna-Marie Pellet with Medical Center Environmental Services. Anna-Marie’s home will be located at 301 College Park Rd., less than 1 mile from the UNC Hillsborough Hospital campus. No construction skills are necessary.

Examining the relationship between length of stay and the time of discharge in pediatric patients
A common strategy used by hospitals to reduce overcrowding of inpatient units may not produce consistent results, a new study suggests. Discharges Before Noon, or DCBNs, are thought to mitigate overcrowding and improve patient outcomes by allowing for earlier emergency department admissions; however, studies of the relationship between DCBNs and length of stay have had mixed results. At the same time, early discharge rates remain a high priority for many hospitals across the country.
