At the 60th American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting in San Diego on Dec. 3, Eben Lichtman, MD, presented preliminary findings from preclinical studies of CAR T-cells directed towards a potential target called B7-H3, which is found on the cell surface of certain types of AML.

UNC Lineberger’s Joshua Zeidner, MD, reported preliminary data at the 60th American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting from a phase II clinical trial for administering a high-dose of the chemotherapy treatment cytarabine followed by an immune checkpoint inhibitor, pembrolizumab, in patients with acute myeloid leukemia that had relapsed or no longer responded to other treatment.

The Department of Surgery received two separate NIH R01 grants in December, 2018.

To study gut bacteria, scientists focus much of their attention on excrement, which is teeming with bacteria that used to live in the gastrointestinal tract. For the sake of scientific accuracy, this experimental poop has needed a name. And now it has one thanks to UNC School of Medicine scientist Aadra Bhatt, PhD, and colleagues.

The UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health has been awarded a $2.4-million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The project will address homelessness and provide comprehensive behavioral health care and other services for individuals living with serious mental illnesses who are experiencing or who are at risk for homelessness. Thava Mahadevan, MS, director of operations at the UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health is PI for the five-year-grant.

Mike Steiner, MD, MPH, pediatrician in chief of UNC Children’s, will help lead the North Carolina Integrated Care for Kids program, which aims to create a new care and services model for children in five counties.
