Kibbe wins Women Leaders in Medicine Award
Melina Kibbe, MD, Colin G. Thomas Jr. Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery, was honored with the 12th Annual Women Leaders in Medicine Award from the American Medical Student Association. Kibbe was nominated by Perry Tsai, MD, PhD, National President of the American Medical Student Association and recent MD and PhD graduate from the UNC School of Medicine.

Scientists Discover Key Enzyme in Breast Cancer Proliferation, Treatment Resistance
In lab experiments, researchers led by Michael Emanuele, PhD, found that the enzyme USP21 protects the protein FOXM1, which has been implicated in basal-like breast cancer progression, metastasis, and poor patient outcomes.

UNC School of Medicine Ranked First for Primary Care for Second Straight Year
In the annual rankings of “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” U.S. News & World Report ranked UNC School of Medicine 1st for primary care, 23rd in research, 4th for family medicine, 9th for rehabilitation counseling, 11th for obstetrics and gynecology, 20th for psychiatry, and 26th for internal medicine.

Brain Stimulation Improves Depression Symptoms, Restores Brain Waves in Clinical Study
UNC School of Medicine researchers led by Flavio Frohlich, PhD, are the first to use transcranial alternating current brain stimulation (tACS) to significantly reduce symptoms in people diagnosed with major depression.

Wayfinding App Coming in 2019 for UNC Medical Center, UNC REX; Robot Mapping to Begin March 11
Later this year, a customized, mobile wayfinding app will be available to help patients, visitors and staff find their way from one end of the hospital to the other at UNC Medical Center and UNC REX Healthcare. We are partnering with a company named Gozio Health to launch this app. To have the most accurate information possible, starting March 11, Gozio Health’s staff will do a walkthrough of the hospitals.

Cameron named Chair of Department of Microbiology and Immunology
Craig E. Cameron, PhD, has been named Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, effective September 1, 2019. Cameron comes to UNC from Pennsylvania State University, where he holds the title of Eberly Chair in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Dr. Cristy Page Named School of Medicine Executive Dean
Cristy Page, MD, MPH, Chair of UNC Family Medicine, has been named Executive Dean of the UNC School of Medicine, effective February 18, 2019. This leadership position was vacated when Dr. Wesley Burks assumed the dual role of Dean of the School of Medicine and CEO of UNC Health Care.
