Special speakers and dozens of UNC colleagues and friends gathered Monday in the NC Cancer Hospital Courtyard to officially kick off construction for a new surgical tower scheduled for completion in 2022.

This week, UNC Health Care CEO Wesley Burks, MD, dean of the UNC School of Medicine, welcomed special guests, faculty, staff, and friends to a groundbreaking event for the new Surgical Tower, a 333,555 square-foot building scheduled to open in 2022.

The new facility, which will be located directly in front of UNC Memorial Hospital on Manning Drive, will allow UNC Health Care to create new, enhanced surgical spaces, new pre- and post-op rooms, and comfortable waiting spaces for our patients’ families and loved ones. It will expand the Medical Center’s surgical spaces to accommodate new equipment and procedures, which are being developed by providers at UNC Medical Center and around the world.

This ambitious project, when complete, will be the largest building on UNC Medical Center’s Chapel Hill campus and will also give UNC Health Care an opportunity to enhance our existing infrastructure.
