CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – May 15, 2019 – The Leapfrog Group awarded top “A” grades to five hospitals affiliated with UNC Health Care on its Spring 2019 report card, reflecting their commitment to protecting patients and delivering excellent care.

UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, UNC REX Healthcare in Raleigh, Johnston Health in Clayton, UNC Rockingham Health in Eden, and Wayne UNC Health in Goldsboro all received top marks on Leapfrog’s Spring 2019 report card.

UNC REX in Raleigh is the only hospital in North Carolina – and one of only 41 across the country – to receive straight A’s since Leapfrog began grading hospitals for safety in 2012.

“As the state’s health care system, we are grateful for the Leapfrog Group’s recognition of our efforts,” said Dr. Wesley Burks, CEO of UNC Health Care. “I thank our physicians and co-workers for their attention in keeping our patients safe and providing the highest quality care.”

Developed under the guidance of a National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 publicly available safety measures to assign A-F grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and transparent, and the results are free to the public. Nationwide, 832 hospitals received A grades in the Spring 2019 report.

“To be recognized nationally as an ‘A’ hospital is an accomplishment the whole community should take pride in,” said Leah Binder, CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals that earn an ‘A’ grade are making it a priority to protect patients from preventable medical harm and error. We congratulate hospital leaders, board members, staff, volunteers and clinicians who work so hard to earn this A. The leadership at these distinguished hospitals are committed to putting patients first, every minute of every day.”
