Eldad Hadar, MD, has been appointed Interim Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery. Most recently Hadar served as the Department’s Vice Chair, Residency Director, and Section Chief of Functional Neurosurgery.

Matt Ewend, MD, FACS, who has led the Department since its establishment in 2010, will step down as Department Chair to focus on his responsibilities as President of UNC Physicians. Ewend will remain active and involved in patient care both in the clinic and OR.

Since arriving at UNC, Hadar has been an active member of the neurosurgical service. In addition to his general neurosurgery practice, he serves as director of both the Epilepsy Surgery and Functional Neurosurgery programs and has been a member of the UNC Spine Center since 2002.

Hadar has a special interest in neurosurgical education. He is actively involved in the education and training of medical students and residents, and serves as the Neurosurgery Residency Program Director.

He is highly regarded at UNC Health Care for his extensive education and training accomplishments both at UNC and nationally, and has received numerous teaching awards and honors. Hadar also serves on numerous multidisciplinary hospital committees focused on the quality and improvement of patient care.
