Jeffrey Keith Smith, MD, PhD, will serve as Interim Chair of the Department of Radiology, effective Sept. 25.


J. Keith Smith, MD, PhD, has been appointed Interim Chair of the Department of Radiology, effective Sept. 25.

Smith is a professor of Radiology and Neurosurgery and has served as Executive Vice Chair of Radiology since 2018. He is also the department’s Director of Faculty Development for Clinical Faculty. Since 2011, Smith has held a variety of leadership roles including: Vice Chair of Clinical Research, Vice Chair of Diagnostic Services, and Director of Clinical Research.

Smith’s areas of research interests are physiologic imaging and brain tumor. He holds a PhD in physiology from Louisiana State University, and is a board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology and Neuroradiology.

Smith’s interim Chair appointment comes as Matthew Mauro, MD, FACR, FSIR, FAHA, former Chair of Radiology, steps down to focus on his responsibilities as President of UNC Faculty Physicians. Mauro, Ernest H. Wood Distinguished Professor of Radiology and Professor of Surgery, has served as Chair of the Department of Radiology since 2007.
