Genevieve S. Neal-Perry, MD, PhD, has been named Chair of the UNC School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, effective April 15, 2020.


Genevieve S. Neal-Perry, MD, PhD, has been named Chair of the UNC School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, effective April 15, 2020.

Neal-Perry comes to UNC from the University of Washington where she has served since 2015, most recently in the role of Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Director of the Cancer and Reproduction Clinic at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

Daniel Clarke-Pearson, MD, stepped down as Department Chair after 13 years of service in June, 2019. Jennifer Wu, MD, MPH, will continue her leadership as Interim Chair up until Neal-Perry’s arrival in Chapel Hill.

We look forward to welcoming her to UNC and working closely with her to advance the research, clinical, and education missions of her department,” said Cristy Page, MD, MPH, Executive Dean of the UNC School of Medicine. “We are also grateful to Dr. Wu for the outstanding job she has done as Interim Chair and to Dr. Clarke-Pearson for his many years of service and numerous contributions to the department and the School of Medicine.”

Dr. Genevieve Neal-Perry received BA from Dartmouth College and an MD and PhD in pharmacology from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She completed residency and fellowship training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Beth Israel Medical Center and Montefiore Medical Center, respectively. Prior to joining the University of Washington Dr. Neal-Perry was the Associate Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Neuroscience and Associate Dean for Diversity Mentoring at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Neal-Perry has several national leadership roles which include standing NIH study section member for ICER and RAGS member of the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) Division of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Basic Science Vice President for the Endocrine Society. She has co-authored more than 50 original research manuscripts, reviews and book chapters in the field of reproductive science. Her research is designed to understand how nutrition, aging, and ovarian hormones regulate fertility and brain function. Dr. Neal-Perry’s research has received many accolades and her research has been presented at national and international scientific meetings. Her research has been funded by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the American Federation for Aging Research and the National Institute of Health.

Dr. Neal-Perry’s clinical interests include the treatment of infertility, oncofertility, disorders of the ovary, disorders of menses, disorders of the pituitary and hypothalamus that affect reproduction, recurrent pregnancy loss, menopause, and disorders of puberty.

She also has a passion for mentoring women as well as individuals from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in medicine into careers in science and medicine.

Outside of work, Neal-Perry enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking, Zumba and reading.
