i2b2 is a web application designed to improve your research experience. i2b2 links with the Carolina Data Warehouse for Health and allows UNC investigators to explore and query de-identified, aggregate data. The application will give you a view of UNC Health Care data so you can determine feasibility for clinical trials and explore potential cohorts in a safe-harbor “sandbox.”
The North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute offers a self-paced, online training program that introduces you to i2b2 and teaches you how to get the most out of the application. The training includes an overview of i2b2, what data are available in i2b2, how to build a query, and how to use advanced functions of i2b2. The training takes about an hour to complete.
To use i2b2 you must have a valid UNC-Chapel Hill ONYEN and have completed the i2b2 training.
Completion of the i2b2 training also allows you to register for and then use the Accrual Clinical Trials (ACT) Network. The ACT Network is a real-time platform allowing researchers to explore and validate feasibility for clinical studies across CTSA Consortium sites.
With the combined tools of i2b2 and ACT at your disposal, your research team will be able to:
- Explore patient populations
- Better define your study population
- Determine clinical trial feasibility
- Learn more about the populations that UNC serves for purposes beyond preparing a study
- Find partner sites with similar population counts for multi-site studies
- Cite population counts in a grant application to demonstrate the need for an intervention
- List population counts in your IRB submission
