The 36-bed EDTU, which was previously used for clinic space, was renovated during the past two years to help handle the increasing volume in the very busy Emergency Department.

UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill is excited to announce that a new EDTU (Emergency Department Transition Unit) opened on Tuesday (Sept. 1, 2020).

The 36-bed EDTU, which was previously used for clinic space, was renovated during the past two years to help handle the increasing volume in the very busy Emergency Department. The goal is to improve the care available for medical and behavioral health emergencies, while providing more space to make it easier for our employees to do their jobs.

“We are thrilled to begin utilizing this safe, secure, therapeutic and patient/family centered space,” said Dr. Jane Brice, chair of emergency medicine at UNC Medical Center.

The EDTU consists of 12 dedicated behavioral health beds, 12 dedicated medical beds, and 12 beds which can be flexed or transitioned between patient populations as needed.
