Paul Dayton, PhD, Interim Chair of the UNC / NCSU Joint
Paul Dayton, PhD, Interim Chair of the UNC / NCSU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, has received the 2020 IEEE Carl Hellmuth Hertz Ultrasonics Award for his outstanding contributions to the study of microbubbles and phase change contrast agents in ultrasound imaging and therapy. This prestigious award is given to investigators who have not only contributed to the field of ultrasonics, but also have track records of exceptional scholarly publications, technical reports and/or inventions and patents. This award was named after Carl Hellmuth Hertz who was both a researcher and mentor to others in the field of medical diagnostic ultrasound imaging.
“Paul Dayton is a world leader in ultrasound-targeted therapeutic drug delivery and an entrepreneur,” said Blossom Damania, PhD, UNC School of Medicine Vice Dean for Research. “We are extremely proud of all of his accomplishments and this award is so well deserved.”
Dayton is also a member of the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center and has amassed an impressive publication record, multiple patents, two clinical trials and has co-founded three startup companies: SonoVol, Inc, Nanosonic Bioreagents, LLC, and Triangle Biotechnology, Inc. He is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biomedical Engineering, and his publications have been placed in the “Top 8 Highly Cited Articles” and “Top 20 Downloaded Papers” to name a few of his many accolades.
