We are pleased to share updates to the UNC Children’s Heart Center. Our overriding mission continues to focus on providing the best family-centered individualized care through a multidisciplinary team approach. Joining our Co-Directors of the Heart Center, Dr. Mahesh “Max” Sharma and Dr. Timothy Hoffman, is Danielle Stolfi MSN, RN, CCRN, who has been named the Interim Manager for the program. The Heart Center Leadership team welcomes Dr. Matt McDaniel (Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology) and Dr. Wayne Price (Neonatology) in addition to Dr. Benny Joyner, who leads the newly-formed Section of Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care.

Our team continues to make great strides. Since June of 2018, outcomes for all tiers of surgical complexity have been exemplary, with an overall survival rate of 97.6%, which when benchmarked against the aggregate data of the Society for Thoracic Surgeon’s Congenital Heart Surgery Database, is better than the national average. In Fiscal Year 2020 (July 2019 – June 2020), our survival rate is over 98% despite the high-risk conditions of many of our children. We are on pace to have the highest number of pediatric heart transplants in our recent past – seven since 2018. With this increase, we maintain a 100% survival rate with our transplant patients.

Please join us in thanking the entire Children’s Heart Center team for their great work.
