Maureen Kohi, MD, FSIR, FAHA, has been named Chair of the UNC School of Medicine’s Department of Radiology, effective December 31, 2020.

Kohi comes to UNC from the University of California, San Francisco where she currently serves as Associate Professor and Chief of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. She holds clinical appointments at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and the San Francisco Veterans Administration Hospital.

Keith Smith, MD, PhD, has served as Interim Chair of the Department since September 2019. Prior to Smith, Matt Mauro, MD, held the position for 12 years before stepping down to focus on his current responsibilities as President of UNC Faculty Physicians.

“It is with great honor and humility that I assume the role of Chair of the Department of Radiology, succeeding Matt Mauro, an amazing leader and visionary,” said Kohi. “The UNC Radiology Department has an outstanding national reputation for clinical prowess, academic excellence and a robust research footprint with faculty and learners who wholeheartedly embody the ‘play hard, play smart, play together’ Carolina Way. I look forward to working with my colleagues both within and outside the Department to further build upon these past successes.”

Kohi’s clinical and research focus is women’s health and interventions, including the evaluation of minimally invasive treatments for uterine fibroids, morbidly adherent placenta, interventional oncology, and the effects of gender differences in cardiovascular disease and cancers.

In the field of radiology, Kohi is a national leader, serving as an Executive Council Member of the Society for Interventional Radiology, Development Division Chair of the Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation, Scientific Chair of the Society of Interventional Radiology’s Annual Meeting, Associate Editor for the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, Chair of the Women in Interventional Radiology Governing Council, and member of the Vascular Interventional Advances Physician Board. Finally, Kohi also serves as the President of the Western Angiographic and Interventional Society.

Kohi has been a member of the UCSF faculty since 2012. She is a graduate of Stanford University. She received her MD with honors from New York Medical College and completed her Diagnostic Radiology residency and fellowship trainings in Vascular and Interventional Radiology and Women’s Imaging at UCSF.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Kohi joining the UNC School of Medicine as Chair of the Department of Radiology. She brings a wealth of leadership experience at both the institutional and national level as well as clinical and research excellence that make her a perfect fit,” said Cristy Page, MD, MPH, Executive Dean of the UNC School of Medicine. “Thank you to Drs. Smith and Mauro for their leadership of the department and to the faculty for creating a culture that promotes the absolute highest quality of clinical care, research, and education.”
