The School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a dynamic leader to fill the position of Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADDEI).

The University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine’s mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of North Carolinians and others whom we serve. We accomplish this by providing leadership and excellence in the interrelated areas of patient care, education, advocacy, and research. We strive to promote faculty, staff, and learner development in a diverse, respectful environment where our colleagues demonstrate professionalism, enhance learning, and create personal and professional sustainability. We optimize our partnership with the UNC Health Care System through close collaboration and a commitment to service.

The Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADDEI) reports to the Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (VDDEI) with the responsibility for supporting efforts to conceptualize, define, assess, nurture, and cultivate diversity as an institutional and educational resource. The position will work closely with UNC SOM Diversity Liaisons to identify, develop, and implement department-specific action steps and metrics, and provide tools to support Diversity Liaison efforts to measure and improve diversity at the departmental level. Additionally, the position will oversee efforts to address both broad and specific issues of faculty diversity and success. In the absence of the VDDEI, this position will, on occasion, attend meetings and manage the staff and resources of the Office of Inclusive Excellence.

The primary responsibilities of the ADDEI include:

  • Work with each department Diversity Liaison to prioritize DEI goals, develop robust diversity plans, monitor the implementation of those plans as well as departmental progress in improving and advancing diversity, and establish future directions and activities
  • Conduct monthly meetings with the Diversity Liaisons to provide leadership development, a safe space to process DEI-related issues, and provide coaching where needed
  • Serve on the Faculty Affairs and Diversity Leadership Committee to support faculty diversity efforts and lead faculty diversity efforts within the Office of Inclusive Excellence
  • Support faculty from groups that are underrepresented in medicine (URM) and/or historically marginalized as well as leading efforts focused on URM faculty recruitment, hiring, advancement, and success
  • Collaborate with and connect the efforts of the Office of Scholastic Enrichment and Equity, Office of Rural Initiative, Resident and Faculty Pipeline Initiatives, and the Director of Diversity Affairs and IMSD with the Diversity Liaisons to enhance diversity goals in the basic science and clinical departments
  • Work closely with the VDDEI and Diversity Liaisons to collaborate with the UNC Health Care System (HCS) and other partner organizations responsible for advancing DEI throughout the organization

The position of Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion requires a doctoral degree, with a record of significant progressive leadership experience. The person must have the credentials to qualify for appointment on the faculty of one of the departments of the School of Medicine.
