The UNC Academy of Educators (AOE), housed in the Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development, has revitalized its former Residents as Teachers program with a new name: Teaching As a Resident: Highlighting the Evidence and Enthusiasm of Learning (TARHEEL) Program. Read on to learn more about the program and the 2020-21 cohort.

The Teaching As a Resident: Highlighting the Evidence and Enthusiasm of Learning (TARHEEL) Program, newly revamped and piloted in 2020, offers UNC residents the opportunity to participate in a standardized program to improve cross-department collaboration, enhance engagement between faculty and residents, and increase academic scholarly projects and publications, beneficial to enhancing faculty educational scholarship.
This newly developed curriculum augments the teaching skills of residents in mentoring and educating medical students, physician assistant students, and other learners across the UNC Hospitals and the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) system. Sessions are facilitated by UNC faculty and the TARHEEL Program Co-Directors Drs. Katie Weinel (Psychiatry), Winston Li (Psychiatry), and Eric Zwemer (Pediatrics).
In 2020-2021, two cohorts have been selected, consisting of 21 residents in the fall and 23 in the spring. Congratulations to the following residents on their completion of the program!
