The Lupus Research Alliance (LRA) is accepting Letters of Intent (LOIs) to support creative scientists from all relevant scientific disciplines to provide them robust and sustained support to explore bold and paradigm-shifting ideas that could lead to ground-breaking discoveries in lupus research. The Distinguished Innovator Awards provide outstanding scientists with substantial support to conduct novel research into the fundamental causes of systemic lupus erythematosus and so provide new directions towards a cure. Award amount up to $250,000 per year for up to four (4) years. The LOI deadline is March 16, 2020.

The UNC Center for Women’s Health Research is continually seeking ways to promote the essential work being done by researchers in alignment with our mission: Learning about diseases, disorders, and conditions that uniquely affect women, predominantly affect women, and affect women differently than men.

The Department of Allied Health Sciences Office of Research and Scholarship is pleased to announce its third and final round of pilot funding for the Sleep Innovation Research Grant (SIRG) program.

Tutors are needed for the Patient Centered Care course in the UNC School of Medicine. The course enables students to learn the core clinical skills—History-Taking, Physical Examination, Communication, Clinical Reasoning, Patient-Centered Care, and Professionalism— necessary for future patient care.

Last week, the Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development and the Association of Professional Women in Medical Sciences (APWIMS) hosted a panel focused on the Daily Career and Life Transitions of women faculty. Over 80 women from the School of Medicine and the Adams School of Dentistry participated in the event.

This new treatment was developed after years of research, much of it spearheaded and completed by Wesley Burks, MD, and Edwin Kim, MD at the UNC School of Medicine.

Zhen Gu, Ph.D., a former professor in the UNC/NSCU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, led animal studies, a precursor to human trials, for a new device to automatically manage glucose levels and deliver needed insulin quickly. UNC’s John Buse, MD, Ph.D., was co-author of the study.

The National Cancer Institute has named Satish Gopal, MD, MPH, director of the NCI Center for Global Health. He began this his new role February 3, 2020.

In the last month, there has been an outbreak of a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) originating in Wuhan, China.
