Effective Jan. 11, the Adult Prepare Red Blood Cell and Transfuse Red Blood Cell orders will default to a unit setting of 1. To avoid transfusing more blood than necessary, providers are encouraged to order one unit of blood at a time for stable, non-bleeding patients, and then clinically reassess the patient prior to ordering subsequent units.

The single-unit default will make it easier for providers to order one unit of blood. This change is part of UNC Health’s ongoing Care Redesign effort to optimize patient blood management, which is linked to the System’s FY21 Goals. We plan to share additional information about this effort in the coming months.

Note: Providers will not lose any personalized settings, and order sets and therapy plans including these panels will not lose their customized settings.

Please email Care Redesign Leader, Pamela Entzel, with any questions and/or concerns.
