Care Redesign is launching a system-wide campaign to reduce unwarranted red blood cell transfusions, which is a System goal for FY21. Unwarranted red blood cell transfusions do not benefit our patients and may even cause them harm.
The Joint Commission, the American Medical Association and the Choosing Wisely campaign have all identified blood transfusion as a frequently over utilized procedure, and additional information is available on the Patient Blood Management intranet site, including recommended clinical guidelines and education materials.
We plan to share additional information with you in the coming months as this campaign continues to evolve. In the meantime, we encourage you to talk with your co-workers about appropriate transfusion practices.
