Expertscape, an online database that assesses and ranks the expertise and contributions of physicians and medical institutions worldwide, rated multiple UNC biomedical researchers and physicians as top-rated experts in their fields for its 2021 rankings.


Expertscape ranks people and institutions by their expertise in more than 29,000 biomedical topics. The website bases its rankings on scientific publications, reviewing medical journal articles from the National Institutes of Health’s PubMed journal database dating back to 2010. Each article is assigned a score based on a number of criteria, including the journal’s prominence and the type of article. Below are the UNC physicians that ranked in the top 20 experts in their fields.

A. Wesley Burks, MD, Dean of the UNC School of Medicine, CEO of UNC Health, and Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs at UNC Chapel Hill, has been recognized as the top expert in the world for peanut hypersensitivities.

Lisa A. Carey, MD, FASCO, L. Richardson and Marilyn Jacobs Preyer Distinguished Professor for Breast Cancer Research, Division of Oncology; Deputy Director of Clinical Sciences; UNC Lineberger member, has been recognized as the number eight expert in breast cancer in the world and U.S.

Nicholas J. Shaheen, MD, MPH, Mary Kay and Eugene Bozymski, and Linda and William Heizer Distinguished Professor of Medicine; Chief, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, has been recognized as the number two esophageal diseases expert in the world, and the number one expert in Barrett’s Esophagus. UNC Lineberger member, he has also been recognized as the number 14 expert in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in the world and number 10 in the U.S.

John B. Buse, MD, PhD, Verne S. Caviness Distinguished Professor of Medicine; Chief, Division of Endocrinology; Director, UNC Diabetes Center, has been recognized as the number nine expert in diabetes mellitus in the world and number six for type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Ada Adimora, MD, MPH, Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases; Professor of Epidemiology, Gillings School of Public Health, has been recognized as the number 17 expert in AIDS and HIV in the world, and 13 in the U.S.

Evan S. Dellon, MD, MPH, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, has been recognized as the number 13 expert in hematologic diseases in the world, and ninth in the U.S. Dellon has also been recognized as the number eight expert in immune system diseases in the world and number three in the U.S.

Cynthia Bulik, PhD, FAED, Distinguished Professor of Eating Disorders; Founding Director, UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders; Professor, Nutrition, Gillings School of Global Public Health; Associate Director, UNC Center for Psychiatric Genomics, has been recognized as the number two eating disorders expert in the world and number one in the U.S.

Stephanie D. Davis, MD, Chair, Department Of Pediatrics; Physician-In-Chief, N.C. Children’s Hospital; Charles Everett and Katherine M. Brewer Professor of Pediatrics, has been recognized as the number 13 expert in cystic fibrosis in the U.S.

Myron Cohen, MD, Yeargan-Bate Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Microbiology & Immunology, and Epidemiology; Associate Vice Chancellor, Global Health and Medical Affairs; Director, Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases, has been recognized as number four in the world and U.S. for HIV infections. He has also been recognized as the number two expert in the world and U.S. in HIV seropositivity, along with number five expert in the world and U.S. in sexually transmitted diseases.

Joseph Eron, MD, Herman and Louise Smith Distinguished Professor of Medicine; Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases; Director, Clinical Core, UNC Center for AIDS Research; Associate Director, General Clinical Research Unit, has been recognized as the number nine expert in the world in HIV infections and eight in the U.S. He has also been recognized as the number nine expert in sexually transmitted diseases in the world, and number eight in the U.S.

Blossom Damania, PhD, Boshamer Distinguished Professor, Microbiology & Immunology; Vice Dean for Research, UNC School of Medicine; UNC Lineberger member, has been recognized as the number three expert in the world and U.S. in Kaposi sarcoma.

Dirk Dittmer, PhD, Professor, Microbiology and Immunology; UNC Lineberger member, has been recognized as the number four expert in the world in Kaposi sarcoma.

Ralph Baric, PhD, Professor, Microbiology and Immunology, William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor, Department of Epidemiology in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, and UNC Lineberger member, has been recognized as the number four expert in the world in SARS and the number three expert in the U.S.

Joseph Tucker, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Division of Infectious Diseases; Director, UNC Project-China, has been recognized as the number 17 expert in the world in sexually transmitted diseases and number 13 in the U.S.

Jude Samulski, PhD, Professor, Pharmacology, has been recognized as the number eight expert in the world in gene therapy and number five in the U.S.

Ben Philpot, PhD, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Cell Biology & Physiology; Associate Director of the UNC Neuroscience Center, has been recognized as the number one expert in the world in Angelman syndrome.

Mark Zylka, PhD, W.R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Cell Biology & Physiology, has been recognized as the number five expert in the world and U.S. in Angelman syndrome.

Matthew Judson, PhD, research associate in the Philpot lab, is ranked as the fourth leading expert in Angelman syndrome.

Hendrée Jones, PhD, Professor, Obstetrics & Gynecology; Executive Director, Horizons Program, has been recognized as the number five expert in the world in opioid-related disorders and number four in the U.S. She is also the number one expert in the world in neonatal abstinence syndrome.

William Fischer, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine, has been recognized as the number 12 expert in the world in hemorrhagic fever-Ebola and number eight in the U.S.

Nigel Mackman, PhD, John Parker Professor of Hematology; Professor of Pathology; Professor of Pharmacology; member of the UNC Blood Research Center, has been recognized as the number six expert in the world in thrombosis and number five in the U.S.
