UNC is part of a national effort, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Diversity Program Consortium, to identify best mentoring practices for scientists underrepresented in biomedical research.
Are you a racially underrepresented (UR) Associate or Full Professor who has experience mentoring postdoctoral fellows or early career faculty AND has a history of funding for biomedical research (the study of the biological/behavioral processes that advance the diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention of disease)?
If yes, you are needed as a facilitator for the UNC PROMISE study (Peer group Research On Mentoring underrepresented Scientists). PROMISE is one of only 11 sites nationally to have been funded by the NIH (NIH-U01-GM132374) to conduct rigorous controlled research to identify best practices for mentoring those racially/ethnically underrepresented in the biomedical workforce. PROMISE is comparing two peer group mentoring approaches for their positive impact on both personal gains (e.g., sense of belonging, research self-efficacy) and longer-term career outcomes (e.g., grants submitted and funded, promotion). Facilitated discussions and activities are designed to promote scholarly output and academic success of peer members.
Facilitation support includes:
· Training (2-4 hours) in the use of a manual to guide discussions and activities.
· Ongoing support from the trainers as needed.
· A dedicated research coordinator to manage all logistics (e.g., scheduling, communications, materials).
· Professional satisfaction in contributing to this national effort and to the career development of UR early career researchers.
You will receive up to $3,400 compensation ($200/each 2-hour session)
