Although the SOM is working with the University on return to campus planning, it has aligned with UNC Health on the date and transition details. While many University operations will resume on July 19, the SOM will remain aligned with UNC Health and follow the Working Forward plan outlined in this message.


In a previous communication, we promised that co-workers classified as SHRA or EHRA NF working remotely will be notified 60 days in advance of our plans for returning to a physical workspace. In an effort to have open and early communication, we are providing you with a preview of what to expect over the next couple of months.

As new COVID cases decrease, vaccinations increase and restrictions ease, co-workers who began working remotely in March of 2020 are beginning to ask about the return to a physical workspace; what will it look like and how it will impact their schedule.

This past year has taught us that our co-workers can – and do – excel in a remote work environment, maintaining (or increasing) productivity while realizing greater flexibility. Working Forward aims to create a nimble workforce while reinventing how, where and when we work. Your leadership team either has met or will soon meet with representatives from the Working Forward Committee and the SOM HR team to develop a plan for your department’s approach to our new work culture model.

We understand that returning to a physical workspace might seem too soon for some while others are more than ready. Rest assured, your health, safety and peace of mind are our top priority as we work through logistics for cleaning/sanitizing spaces, schedules, mask/social distancing etiquette etc.

Co-workers will receive a 60-day notice in early July prior to their return to a physical workspace, whether it is onsite, full-time or hybrid. As of now, our goal is to slowly implement the Working Forward plan beginning Sept. 7. This does not mean everyone returns to a physical workspace at the same time or on the same schedule. More detailed information will be shared in the coming months. We are continuing to evaluate the strategy of our evolving work culture across the organization.
