Lauren Brinkley-Rubinstein, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Social Medicine, is the lead author of a research letter published in the July 7, 2021 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

It is the first scientific article looking at breakthrough cases among vaccinated people in a correctional setting.

“The results of our study demonstrate that vaccination in congregate, high-risk settings like prisons is incredibly effective and should be urgently prioritized,” Brinkley-Rubinstein said.

Meghan Peterson, MPH, project director for the COVID Prison Project and a member of the UNC Re-Envisioning Health & Justice Lab headed by Brinkley-Rubinstein, is a co-author of the letter, which is titled, “Breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 Infections in Prison after Vaccination.”
