AnnaMarie Connolly, MD, FACOG, currently serves as the Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD M’36 Distinguished Professor in the UNC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, in the division of urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has announced that AnnaMarie Connolly, MD, FACOG, will join as the Chief of Education and Academic Affairs in February 2022. As the head of ACOG’s Education Division, Dr. Connolly will ensure the quality of the educational programs that enhance the professional development of ACOG’s members, including annual meetings, freestanding postgraduate continuing medical education courses, and other educational materials for clinicians. Connolly will oversee the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology and will serve as a critical liaison to ABOG, ACGME, and AAMC.
Connolly currently serves as the Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD M’36 Distinguished Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, in the Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. She is the department’s Vice Chair for Education. While her clinical experience focuses on urogynecology and the effects of childbirth on the pelvic floor, her primary academic interests include medical education. She has published original research on educational and clinical programming and tool development.

An undergraduate of Mount Holyoke College, Connolly earned her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. She went on to complete her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at University of North Carolina School of Medicine. She was in private practice for 2 years before returning the UNC where she then completed a fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. Her extensive contributions to the field of obstetrics and gynecology and education include serving as a board examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member and Vice Chair for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s Review Committee for Obstetrics and Gynecology, and member and chair of the American Urogynecologic Society Education Council. Connolly served as OBGYN clerkship director for 8 years, as FPMRS Fellowship Director for 5 years, and as Residency Program Director for 14 years.
She currently serves as the codirector of the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology Residents and Teachers and Leaders course and is codirector of the ACOG Robert C. Cefalo Leadership Institute.
