The School of Medicine’s MD program is seeking to diversify the educators who teach our medical students.
We seek a postdoctoral fellow from an underrepresented group or with experience teaching individuals from groups underrepresented in medicine to teach in the medical school curriculum for a ~4-week organ-system block during the 2022-23 academic year. During the period of instruction, the postdoctoral fellow will be occupied for approximately 75% of each week. The principal investigator (PI) will receive funding to support the salary of the postdoctoral fellow for the one-month effort.
Fellows can come from any department on campus (i.e., within any school within UNC-Chapel Hill). Ideal candidates will have a PhD degree with a background in the biological or physical sciences and an interest in teaching in their career. Candidates may have one or several organ systems of interest (e.g., hematology, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, integumentary, musculoskeletal, neuroscience, endocrine, or reproductive). Candidates will also likely have specific basic science area of specialty or interest (e.g., anatomy, behavioral science, biochemistry, cell biology, epidemiology, genetics, histology, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, or physiology). Please note that at this time, applications are not being accepted in neuroscience.
There is an alternative pathway for those with interests in gross anatomy, histology, or pathology. In these roles, a postdoctoral fellow may teach in the gross anatomy laboratory or histology/pathology laboratory sessions in a distributed fashion from August through May, teaching sessions in all body regions and organ systems as they occur throughout the organ-system blocks.
Duties will include lecturing, joining a faculty member in teaching a small discussion group or laboratory session, holding office hours and review sessions, and being a part of the block leadership team. The selected candidate will be paired with a basic-science faculty mentor; will have a 3-person education mentoring committee; will learn about curriculum, assessment, and technology; and will interact with medical students both formally and informally.
To apply, please send the following to Kurt Gilliland (kogillil@med.unc.edu), Associate Dean of Curriculum in the School of Medicine, by February 28, 2022: (1) curriculum vitae, (2) cover letter (including disciplines and organ systems of interest), (3) a contribution to diversity statement, and (4) letter of support from principal investigator (PI). Top candidates will be interviewed.
