The spring months are here and they are filled with celebrations that reflect the diverse backgrounds, holidays and traditions important to teammates in our UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health communities.
As the weather warms and we move closer to summer, it is important to take a moment to reflect on some of the holidays and traditions our teammates have celebrated recently and will celebrate in the coming weeks.
These celebrations include:
- The Hindu and Sikh observation of Holi from March 17 – March 18, which signifies the triumph of good over evil.
- The Persian observation of Nowruz on March 20, the Persian New Year promoting peace and solidarity.
- The Baha’i observation of Naw-Ruz on March 21, a new year celebration at the end of the Month of Fasting.
- Ramadan from April 1 – May 1, a holy month of fasting, prayer and reflection.
- The Christian observance of Palm Sunday on April 10, memorializing Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem; or/and Easter Sunday on April 17, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus.
- The Jewish recognition of Passover or Pesach from April 15 – April 23, denoting the eight-day holiday commemorating the Israelites’ emancipation from slavery in ancient Egypt.
- And The Baha’i Festival of Ridvan (Paradise) from April 21 to May 2, which commemorates the beginnings of the Baha’i Faith in 1863.
Let us continue to acknowledge, respect and embrace our differences as we build a community of belonging and acceptance.
