Deborah L. Strohman, PhD, CLU, will speak at the Department of Surgery’s June 8 Grand Rounds focused on diversity, equity and inclusion.
The Department of Surgery’s June 8 Grand Rounds will welcome Deborah L. Stroman, PhD, CLU, and will focus on diversity, equity and inclusion.
Stroman will introduce a leadership model and historical context to the examination of structural racism in the United States during the talk. The session will also provide an overview and deeper examination of race, racism, and culture concepts in the United States, as well as the importance of language and communication to foster understanding and belonging in the health care setting and beyond.
Stroman is an enthusiastic entrepreneur and educator at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia. She is a national speaker committed to real talk and strategies that engender intention, change, and innovation. Her instructional focus and experience lie in the leadership domains of equity, entrepreneurship, and sport business.
At UNC-Chapel Hill, she has a faculty appointment in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, whereby her racial equity education expertise is applied as an instructor and advisor in the graduate concentration of Health Equity, Social Justice, and Human Rights. In addition, she is the Education Director of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Research Program for the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and The Odum Institute. Stroman designed and taught the first and only racial equity course for MBA students and has assisted in the implementation of racial equity workshops across campus. At Virginia, she instructs in the graduate program for the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. A former NCAA DI basketball player and founder of the Center of Sport Business and Analytics, Stroman is a leading advocate for Innovation and equity in higher education in the United States.
This Grand Rounds session is open to the UNC community. It will be held in the Surgery Education Center, 4050 Burnett Womack and via WebEx on June 8 from 7:15 – 8:15 a.m.
