Subhashini Sellers, MD, MSc, and Sheryl Jordan, MD, RCC, have been named as the new course directors for the Science of Medicine course, a required course in the Individualization Phase at the UNC School of Medicine. Sellers and Jordan will teach students the science behind medical advances, exploring the steps of basic research, translational research, and clinical research. The course also reviews the ethics of science, funding, and publication.

Sellers is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine and is an attending physician in the Medical Intensive Care Unit. She received her medical degree at Sidney Kimmel Medical College and stayed at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for training in Internal Medicine, followed by a year as Chief Medical Resident. She then joined UNC-Chapel Hill for a fellowship in Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine, and served as Chief Fellow.
Sellers earned a Masters of Science in Clinical Research from UNC Gillings School of Public Health. In addition to her time in the MICU, Sellers also runs the HIV-Pulmonary clinic, a unique general pulmonary clinic co-located within the ID division focused on caring for patients HIV-associated lung diseases. Her research interests include clinical research focused on care delivery for HIV-associated lung diseases and the burden of respiratory viruses in people living with HIV (PLWH), as well as translational research focused on the upper respiratory tract immune response in severe respiratory viral infection in vulnerable populations, including PLWH.
Jordan is a Clinical Professor of Radiology and an alumnus of the UNC School of Medicine. She completed training in Diagnostic Radiology at Duke, and she ultimately returned to UNC-Chapel Hill for a fellowship in Breast Imaging. After leading a large North Carolina practice, Jordan joined the faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2012, where she has excelled in clinical practice, education, and scholarship.
With hundreds of products of scholarship, many in medical education research, Jordan has been recognized as an outstanding educator through various awards and honors, including the UNC School of Medicine Medical Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professorship Award. She completed the Teaching Scholars Program and is a member of the Academy of Educators. Innovative and creative, she serves in multiple leadership roles, including course director for Fundamentals of Investigative Radiology, online delivery of the Breast MRI Fundamentals Fellowship, Undergraduate Medical Education Director for the Department of Radiology, Diversity Liaison, and co-director of the Mauricio Castillo MD Diversity and Inclusion Scholars program.
