The UNC School of Medicine mission reflects a commitment to the recruitment, retention, and support of students from diverse backgrounds by providing an inclusive environment for their medical school career. The inclusion of programming and visible support of first-generation college students is important and reflects this commitment.
Per the AAMC, less than 20% of all medical students identify as first-generation, or first in their family to earn a college degree. In the UNC School of Medicine’s Class of 2025, 15% of students identified as first-generation, an increase from prior years, but still a small and underrepresented number of students.
The First Generation Fellows group offers robust programming aimed at supporting students to build community, grow and thrive during their time in medical school. The program is open to students of all years. In addition, faculty members, fellows and residents who would like to serve as part of this community also are welcome. If you are interested in joining or want more information, please email the program coordinator Felicia Crawford.
