Position Description
The University of North Carolina School of Medicine seeks an innovative, collaborative leader to serve as the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development (FALD). This position reports directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development, School of Medicine (SOM).
The Associate Dean for FALD will be responsible for conceptualizing and implementing new, creative, and modernized programs, policies, and initiatives to improve the career trajectory and vitality of faculty and staff. The Associate Dean for FALD will also serve as a resource for faculty, staff, and SOM leaders assisting and supporting professional and career development, faculty affairs (including advancement, promotion and/or tenure), and leadership development.
Major Responsibilities:
The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development will be responsible for developing and implementing evidence-based approaches to faculty and staff professional development, as well as best practices in advancement and promotion, and faculty recruitment and retention.
- Work collaboratively with the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, the FALD team, and SOM leaders to develop institutional programming that improves faculty performance and retention, the promotion and tenure process, and professional and leadership development.
- Lead FALD programming in professional or leadership development.
- Develop strategies to periodically assess faculty and staff interests and professional development needs, including assessing the current state of mentoring. Use this information to inform existing and future programming.
- Oversee faculty affairs including the Annual Faculty Review, Five-year Department Chair and Center Director Reviews, Advancement, Promotion and Tenure (APT) processes, and Post-Tenure Review. Collaborate with the Office of Human Resources to ensure that Faculty Liaisons and Department Vice Chairs for Faculty Affairs/Faculty Development regarding APT and develop/maintain APT resources.
- Ensure a transparent and equitable process for Standing Committee Elections and Faculty Awards/Recognition
- Develop relevant reports and metrics to measure and monitor the impact of faculty and staff professional development programs.
- Contribute to scholarly products and work to increase FALD’s presence nationally.
Qualifications:
- MD, DO, PhD with minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience; leadership experience in medical school faculty affairs/faculty development preferred
- The chosen candidate must hold a faculty appointment in one of the departments of the School of Medicine.
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion; ability to work with and support a diverse medical school community
- Track record of strong interpersonal skills and ability to build positive professional relationships with diverse stakeholders at all levels in complex, highly dynamic environment
