Department of Emergency Medicine faculty members Martin Casey, MD, MPH, and Michelle Meyer, PhD, MPH, were awarded one of ten scholar and mentor program grants from the National Foundation of Emergency Medicine.
The 2-year program supports outstanding teams of mentors and scholars in emergency medicine. Casey is poised to become a leading clinician researcher on polypharmacy and deprescribing in the emergency department (ED). Given the frequency of ED visits that are the result of inappropriate polypharmacy, it is imperative for the field of emergency medicine to have an expert in promoting and initiating deprescribing conversations.
Under Meyer’s mentorship, the NFEM Scholar and Mentor Program would provide dedicated time for Casey to develop a strong early career development grant to identify missed opportunities to deprescribe inappropriate aspirin use among ED patients with bleeding events.
