The selected individual will lead a diverse group of faculty and staff members and will oversee all aspects of the Department, including clinical practice, education, research, and fiscal management consistent with the strategic planning of the UNC School of Medicine, UNC Hospitals and UNC Health.
The Department of Anesthesiology is nationally recognized for its excellence in clinical care, research and education. The department is comprised of more than 350 faculty, staff and trainees who sustain and drive the tripartite mission to provide the highest quality patient care to all people through innovation, world-class research and training the next generation of surgical health care professionals and scientists.
In FY22, the department provided clinical anesthesia services for over 103,000 patient encounters. Each day it provides care in an average of 101 anesthetizing sites. In addition to patient care, the department teaches residents and medical students the specialty of anesthesiology and, through educational outreach programs, educates the medical community on the highest standards of anesthetic care.
The selected individual will provide leadership and direction for clinical health care across eight academic divisions and 12 program sections including ambulatory, cardiothoracic, critical care, general, liver transplant, neuroanesthesia, obstetric, preanesthetic care, endoscopy, pain management, pediatric anesthesia, regional anesthesia and community practice anesthesiology. In addition to the academic practice locations, the department provides anesthetic care in some of UNC Health’s affiliated system hospitals utilizing an employed group of private practice physicians.
The UNC School of Medicine is ranked #5 nationally in NIH funding among public universities. The Department of Anesthesiology’s research portfolio includes a thematic, NIH-funded research program focused on improving pain outcomes and recovery after stress and trauma. The department also leads research in the areas of pain expression and therapy. Growth in research with associated NIH and other funding sources is a priority for the new chair.
The department has four fellowship programs – obstetric anesthesiology, acute and chronic pain management, pediatric anesthesiology and regional anesthesiology. The department residency program meets all the requirements of the American Board of Anesthesiology and is fully accredited by the American Medical Association’s Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Notably, the department hosts the Carolina Refresher Course, a nationally-attended multi-day CME meeting each year.
In recent years the department has expanded to include a community practice division that includes locations across the triangle and state. This expansion includes services at UNC Holly Springs, UNC Fertility Services, UNC Panther Creek ASC, UNC Wayne Hospital and UNC Johnston Hospital. This integrated model requires a high level of private practice knowledge and strong financial leadership. The chair must work well in a traditional tertiary/quaternary care environment as well as smaller, sometimes rural, community practices.
