Dr. Tony Lindsey, UNC Health’s Chief Medical and Quality Officer since 2015, has announced his plans to retire on October 4, 2024.
Dr. Lindsey’s career is characterized by a focus on improving the health of North Carolinians, whether by direct patient care, directing system quality improvement efforts, or teaching hundreds of medical students and residents.
A native of Clyde, NC, Dr. Lindsey attended medical school at East Carolina and completed his residency training at UNC Hospitals. Then, after a brief stint in South Carolina, he joined the faculty of the UNC School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry in 1989. He then quickly moved into department leadership roles, first as Psychiatry’s Director of Medical Student Education and later as Psychiatry’s Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs. In recognition of his outstanding teaching, he received seven teaching awards selected by medical students.
While continuing to serve as a professor of psychiatry, Dr. Lindsey was appointed Chief Medical Officer for UNC Hospitals in 2010, and then as UNC Health’s first Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in 2015.
As UNC Health CMO, Dr. Lindsey works closely with the CMOs at each entity, is chair of the system Quality Improvement Oversight Committee that governs UNC Health’s quality and safety programs, and leads our Hospital Quality and Innovation, Care Redesign, Physician Advisor, and Central Credentialing teams. He also served on UNC Health’s COVID Leadership Team throughout the pandemic, working closely with our clinical leaders across UNC Health to provide clinical guidance and leadership across the health system and the state. His contributions to UNC Health’s COVID response were crucial to the success of our system in serving North Carolina during the pandemic.
Please join us in thanking Dr. Lindsey for the incredible impact he’s had on our patients and teammates, and in wishing him and his family the very best in retirement!
